Not that Scorsese’s historical epic is without its virtues. The depiction of Civil War New York is uniquely accurate, Daniel Day-Lewis makes another demonstration of his interpretive skills, Scorsese’s themes are once again present (the hero falls and gets up again), while at the same time the violence is ingeniously connected to the country’s history. However, the linear and predictable result lacks the dramatic richness of his best works. Note that here we have the first Scorsese-DiCaprio collaboration, a relationship that later turned into a cinematic passion.
