From Arnold Schoenberg to Ottorino Respighi and Otmar Schick, many 20th century composers turned to the unique combination of voice and string quartet to express pain, loneliness and existential anguish. A typical example is Samuel Barber’s Dover Beach (1931), based on the poem of the same name by Matthew Arnold, which captures in a moving way the inner anguish and sadness of the poem, with the voice conversing with the strings in a perfectly balanced and expressive partnership. The genre evolved into a multidimensional tool for musical storytelling, from the dark ecstasy of the aforementioned works to the bright and extroverted treatment of traditional melodies by younger composers such as Peter Warlock and Vivian Fine. Today, it remains a vibrant and creative field for contemporary composers such as Mark-Anthony Turnage, Aribert Ryman and Kaia Saariaho, with inexhaustible possibilities.

[90,74
73
post-3550","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-90","category-tu-1-el","tag-eng
["GET
