SUMMARY:“En Chordais” — “At Christ in the Castle” by Alexandros Papadiamantis
DESCRIPTION:The musical performance “Christ in the Castle” is based on the eponymous short story by Alexandros Papadiamantis. Following the great success of its premiere in Boston and performances in New York and Thessaloniki\, it now comes to Athens. Vasiliki Nevrokopli has adapted the story into fifteen-syllable rhyming iambic verse\, faithfully and respectfully rendering the style\, language\, and profound spirituality of the writer from Skiathos. The original music is composed by Kyriakos Kalaitzidis\, who set the verses to music according to the rules of Byzantine octoechos\, creating a work that bridges our learned and folk musical traditions. The performance transports us to the Skiathos of the 18th century: a world of faith\, simplicity\, and solidarity. A contemplative yet festive experience for young and old alike\, one that highlights the Greek ethos and the Orthodox spirit of Christmas. \nhttps://www.megaron.gr/en/event/en-chordais-at-christ-in-the-castle-by-alexandros-papadiamantis/

SUMMARY:Periklis Koukos: Retrospectives II
DESCRIPTION:Periklis Koukos\, one of the most important contemporary Greek composers\, moves with ease between different aesthetic worlds. His use of expanded tonality\, polyrhythm\, and modal writing make his personal style unique and instantly recognizable. Following last year’s first installment of the tribute\, Retrospectives II focuses on the composer’s chamber music. \nThe Quintet for flute\, clarinet\, violin\, viola\, and percussion combines rigorous structure\, improvisation\, and an unusual combination of instruments. The arias from the operas Persians and Manuel Salinas\, performed by the internationally rising soprano Maria Kosovitsa\, highlight the lyricism of his writing. The Suite for double bass and piano draws material from the opera Conroy and His Copies. Movements of Darkness for solo flute is inspired by T. S. Eliot’s Second Quartet\, while the Sonata for violin and piano\, written for Leonidas Kavakos\, is counted among his most popular and demanding works. \nhttps://www.megaron.gr/en/event/periklis-koukos-retrospectives-ii/

SUMMARY:Leonard Bernstein: Candide
DESCRIPTION:New series of performances\, following the exceptionally successful first Pan-Hellenic presentation in 2025-26.\nBernstein wrote Candide in the 1950s as a sharp protest against McCarthyism\, political extremism\, and the ever-increasing manipulation of the masses. Drawing on influences from Broadway musicals\, Richard Strauss\, jazz\, tango\, and the contemporary idioms of the 20th century\, the composer delivers a delightful musical cocktail\, from the famous overture to the heroine’s striking parody-aria “Glitter and Be Gay” and the final catharsis with the magnificent “Make Our Garden Grow.” Above all\, though\, the great “Lenny” uses his art to boldly address burning issues such as war\, corruption\, and the abuse of power. Who\, indeed\, could claim that the work does not remain comically-tragically relevant today?\nLibretto in greek. \nProgramme:\nLeonard Bernstein’s Candide (final 1989 version. SUMMARY:Odessa National Opera Ballet-Les Sylphides
DESCRIPTION:The ballet Les Sylphides\, by the ingenious Frédéric Chopin\, is a refined example of neo-Romantic ballet from the early 20th century\, an era in which dance-theatre was seeking new means of expression. The great choreographer and dance reformer Michel Fokine revives the traditions of Romanticism with great respect\, seeking\, as he himself noted\, “to restore conventional ballet dance to the moment of its highest development.” Based on Cervantes’s novella “La Gitanilla\,” Marius Petipa’s “Paquita” goes beyond the bounds of a simple ballet performance; it is a historical treasure that preserves\, unaltered\, the authenticity and grandeur of nineteenth-century classical ballet. The performance stands as a tribute from a new generation of dancers to the aesthetic of this great choreographer and unsurpassed master of the classical style. \nWith the Principals\, Soloists\, and Corps de Ballet of the Odessa National Opera Ballet \nhttps://www.megaron.gr/en/event/odessa-national-opera-ballet-les-sylphides/

SUMMARY:GYSO – Vassilis Varvaressos – Dionyssis Grammenos
DESCRIPTION:Although today they rank among the leading works of the symphonic repertoire\, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Symphony No. 5 did not have an untroubled beginning. When the composer presented his Concerto to the pianist Nikolai Rubinstein\, the latter dismissed it as “trivial and clumsily written.” And yet the Concerto — with its distinctive melody following the opening chords\, a folk tune the composer had heard from a blind beggar on the streets of Kyiv — was destined to become one of the most beloved works in the history of music. The Fifth Symphony becomes the arena in which Tchaikovsky confronts fate. The motif of destiny runs through all four movements of the work\, carrying the music from anguish to triumph. \nThe Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra and Vassilis Varvaresos — one of the most significant Greek pianists of his generation — are conducted by the inspired maestro Dionysis Grammenos. \nhttps://www.megaron.gr/en/event/gyso-vassilis-varvaressos-dionyssis-grammenos/
