SUMMARY:Requiem for the end of love
DESCRIPTION:The Requiem for the end of love\, a work that marked the artistic creation of the 1990s\, marks the highly anticipated reunion of the two emblematic companions of the legendary Ground Team\, Dimitris Papaioannou and Giorgos Koumentakis\, in a new interpretation by the international maestro Theodoros Kourentzis. The production is realized with the support of a donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) to enhance the artistic outwardness of the Greek National Opera. \nIn 1995\, at the Old Power Plant of the Public Power Corporation in Neo Faliro\, the Ground Team made a crack in time with the presentation of the performance-installation One Minute of Silence\, conceived\, directed\, and choreographed by Dimitris Papaioannou\, with music for the first chapter by Giorgos Koumentakis and for the second by Manos Hadjidakis. With the trauma remaining permanent from the deaths of beloved friends from AIDS and with ‘fear haunting the love life of an entire generation’\, Dimitris Papaioannou asked Giorgos Koumentakis to compose a ‘storm of death’ – a requiem for those lost to AIDS. In the same performance\, the hesitant hope for life was brought by the Songs of Sin by Manos Hadjidakis\, with poetry by Dinos Christianopoulos. \nThirty-one years later\, after cycles have opened and closed and paths that are sometimes parallel and sometimes opposite\, Dimitris Papaioannou sets up the large ladder of the stage installation at the National Opera and works again from the beginning on the Requiem for the end of love\, “one of the strongest musical works of George Koumentakis\,” as he himself mentions. The collaboration between the two creators who paved the way for a new stage language in dance\, theater\, opera\, and even for the Ceremonies of the Olympic Games\, is complemented by a brilliant conductor\, whose name is internationally recognized for his individual interpretations in major symphonic works and operas\, Theodore Kurentzis. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Gioconda - National Opera House officially inaugurates the 2025/26 season
DESCRIPTION:The National Opera House officially inaugurates the 2025/26 season with the immensely popular Gioconda by Ponchielli\, in a new major international co-production with two of the world’s leading opera organizations: the Salzburg Easter Festival and the Royal Opera House in London. Conducted by Fabrizio Ventura and directed by the Artistic Director of Covent Garden\, Oliver Mears. The production is made possible with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) grant for the enhancement of the artistic extroversion of the National Opera House. \nLa Gioconda is considered one of the most prestigious grand operas in the repertoire\, not only because it deals with a dramatic story of a great unfulfilled love and self-sacrifice\, but also because it is rich in unique melodies\, famous arias\, and wonderful choral pieces. And of course\, because it includes one of the most famous ballets of all time\, the “Dance of the Hours\,” with a melody that we all know\, as it entered pop culture when it was used in Disney’s Fantasia in 1940. The world premiere of the work took place in 1876 at La Scala in Milan with tremendous success\, comparable to Verdi’s Aida and Otello\, which were written in the same decade. The libretto was written by Tobia Gorrio\, presumably an anagram and pseudonym of the poet and composer Arrigo Boito\, while the plot is based on Victor Hugo’s work Angelo\, Tyrant of Padua. \n  \n

SUMMARY:YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete in Rethymno presents from May 17 to October 31\, 2025\, the art exhibition WHAT YOU WEAR IS WHAT YOU ARE\, with the participation of Greek and foreign artists. \nAn integral part of the exhibition is the special tribute (homage) to the great Rethymno fashion designer Sofia Kokosalaki with international fame\, who unfortunately passed away early. \nWith the exhibition WHAT YOU WEAR IS WHAT YOU ARE\, the curators\, Maria Marangou\, Maria Panayidou and Stavros Kavallaris\, attempt to highlight the correlation of the two-way relationship between fashion and the challenges of our time as they are expressed\, and are influenced by contemporary art and the concerns that it modernly raises. \nSince ancient times\, clothing has covered immediate needs\, boldly defining a person’s place in society\, which over time has evolved into an identifying element. Thus\, fashion becomes an integral part of human everyday life\, (defining) influences\, behaviors and status. Contemporary art “carves” the stagnant\, the old-fashioned\, the serious\, adding the strange and at the same time accessible as a mix of materials\, current issues\, composing\, in this way\, a reborn “authenticity” in 21st century fashion\, where the underground becomes a symbol of a new modernité\, a new camp\, and where luxury cannot by definition be considered elitist. \nThe exhibition features works by twenty-nine (29) artists and designers: Eleonora Antoniadou\, Dimitris Antonitsis\, Eugenia Apostolou\, Vanessa Beecroft\, BlindAdam\, Antonis Volanakis\, Hussein Chalayan\, Dimitris Davis\, Christos Delidimos\, Stamatis Zannos\, Bill Georgoussis\, Rene Habermacher\, Rebecca Horn\, Travis Hutchison\, Anestis Ioannou\, Lefteris Kanakakis\, Kanarek Yael\, Kapurani Bros\, Sofia Kokosalaki\, Elli Komninou-Nenedaki\, Sofia Kosmaoglou\, Yiannis Bournias\, Aliki Palaska\, Angelos Papadimitriou\, Maria Papadimitriou\, Christiana Soulou\, Efi Spyrou\, Versaweiss\, Nikos Charalambidis. \nThe works in the exhibition come from Museum Collections\, private collections and the artists \nThe exhibition is made possible with the support of NEON through its annual Grants Program.

SUMMARY:La Traviata - Greek National Opera
DESCRIPTION:The last production of the 2025/26 GNO season\, the revival of La Traviata\, will be presented for the first time at the Stavros Niarchos Hall\, inaugurating a new era of summer opera performances in the ideal conditions of an air-conditioned hall. \nGiuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece\, directed by Nikos S. Petropoulos\, after its triumphant tour in Thessaloniki and China\, returns to the Greek National Opera twenty-five years after its first performance at Olympia\, as part of a tribute to the great Greek director\, set designer and costume designer of the opera. \nPetropoulos offers us a unique postcard of the French 19th century\, creating a spectacular depiction of the scenes both in Violetta Valéry’s residence in Paris and in her country house on the outskirts of the French capital\, with impressive costumes that are completely consistent with the spirit of the work. \nThe opera describes the love of a courtesan with a scion of a good Parisian family. The relationship provokes the reaction of the young man’s family\, the couple separates and meets again shortly before the girl’s death. \nThe premiere of La Traviata\, in 1853 at the Teatro Fenice in Venice\, is usually cited as one of the greatest failures in the history of opera. “La Traviata was a fiasco\, don’t look for excuses\, it’s just the way it is\,” Verdi wrote to his publisher Tito Ricordi the very next day\, on March 7\, 1853. A century and a half later\, Verdi’s masterpiece is recognized as one of the most popular works in the repertoire\, with hundreds of performances each year in opera houses around the world and thousands of spectators watching it ecstatically. \nIn La Traviata\, Verdi achieves a detailed psychographic portrait of his heroine. Depending on the transitions in her psychology\, Verdi composes for the voice in a different way in each act. In Act I\, the voluptuous freedom and the glamorous but decadent Paris are described with music that demands virtuoso skills from the soprano who interprets the title role. In Act II\, the serenity of life in nature and the heroine’s deep emotions are conveyed by the warm voice of the lyrical soprano\, while the tragic capture of thwarted love is highlighted by the dark tones of the voice that express pain and despair. \n

SUMMARY:Excellent pianist masters demanding Mozart and Chopin scores in this year's recital
DESCRIPTION:In his long international career\, he managed to stand out as a “purebred” virtuoso\, capable of taming even the most demanding piano scores. With similar success and imagination\, he moved into the parallel musical universe of jazz; his tenure in these two different stylistic worlds gave his jazz performances something of the clarity and well-intentioned cerebrality of classical music\, while at the same time offering his classical interpretations something of the spontaneity and freshness of jazz. \nThis year’s recital includes important solo piano works by Mozart and Chopin and concludes with a reading of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s stirring Second Sonata\, in its original 1913 version\, which is rarely heard today due to its extreme virtuoso challenges\, but always conveys the passion and pianistic brilliance of the great Russian composer’s writing.

SUMMARY:New York\, New York
DESCRIPTION:Music\, New York and a double path to the top\, where sweet success and utter loneliness lurk. Scorsese’s cinematic loves come together in a melodic\, flashy and\, as always\, bittersweet tribute to the era of big bands and swing\, with Golden Globe nominees Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli delightfully portraying an egotistical saxophonist and a talented singer. Well-crafted musical numbers\, nostalgic depiction of the era and a moving\, if not entirely solid\, handling of a story about the price of success.
