Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece, directed by Nikos S. Petropoulos, after its triumphant tour in Thessaloniki and China, returns to the National Opera House twenty-five years after its first presentation at the Olympia, as part of a tribute to the great Greek opera director, set designer, and costume designer.
Petropoulos offers us a unique postcard of 19th-century France, creating a spectacular depiction of scenes both in Violetta Valéry’s Parisian residence and her country house on the outskirts of the French capital, with impressive costumes fully faithful to the spirit of the work.
The opera depicts the love between a courtesan and a young man from a good Parisian family. Their relationship provokes the young man’s family’s disapproval, the couple separates, and they reunite shortly before the young woman’s death.
